David is a retired mathematics professor and is the spouse, parent, or grandparent of eight individuals living with various mental health diagnoses. He lives in Durham and is a member of NAMI Johnston County. He joined NAMI in 1997 and served on the NAMI Durham Board for 17 years in the positions of President, Vice President, Programs Director, Newsletter Editor, Walk Team Captain, and Webmaster. David has taught many classes of Family to Family, Basics, and Homefront, and he and his wife Dorothy have facilitated a Triangle Area NAMI Young Families Support Group since 2010. They also led a presentation team for Parents & Teachers as Allies for the Triangle Area. In 2009, NAMI NC gave David a Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2016 he shared the Steve Jordan Award with Dorothy. From 2008 to 2014 David was the NAMI NC representative and Chair of the Human Rights Committee at Central Regional Hospital. He now represents NAMI on weekly Care Reviews for children and youth at Alliance Behavioral Healthcare, and he is the NAMI representative on a SAMHSA grant committee at NC Central University for a three-year project on suicide prevention.
