Joining the Pack: Dog Adoptions for a Better Quality of Life

There are many studies that show the emotional and social benefits of having a dog. Persons who live with mental illness love pets just like everyone else, unfortunately, they don’t always have the resources to adopt a dog, pay adoption and vaccination fees, or take a class to train their new pet. This is why NAMI South Mountains decided to focus their Community Inclusion project on giving peers opportunities to adopt dogs, just like everyone else! Not only will peers gain a new furry friend, but they will also be connected to a system of natural supports in their dog training classes and the “dog social group” that will meet at dog parks and other events!
