NAMI NC Executive Director Resigns

Dear NAMI Affiliate Members:

After 2½ years of service as NAMI NC Executive Director, Jack Register has tendered his resignation. Jack’s last day with NAMI NC will be July 15, 2017, as he has accepted a new role as CEO of National Area Health Education Center Organization.

During his tenure, Jack has led NAMI NC through substantial growth. NAMI NC has expanded its physical office at our Raleigh location, but NAMI NC has also expanded its footprint regarding our role in policymaking as it pertains to people living with mental illness. Jack served as the only mental health advocate on the Governor’s Task Force under Gov. McCrory, and as such was a constant voice advocating for the needs and wishes of consumers and family members. Jack was also named to the national role of Chair of the Executive Directors Council.

Under Jack’s leadership, NAMI NC was awarded the Advancing Evidence-Based Practices Award by the North Carolina Evidence Based Practices Center. The award recognizes NAMI NC for best exemplifying the advancement of evidence-based practices in the mental health field in North Carolina. As we have seen increased consolidation of LME/MCOs and the public service array continues to shrink, NAMI NC has continued to be the only statewide consumer/family advocacy group in a time of unprecedented change toward a privatized system. This consistency is due, in no small part, to Jack’s leadership.
Going forward, we pledge to keep affiliates appraised on how the search is progressing. In the interim, Nicholle Karim will assume the role of Interim Executive Director effective July 15, 2017, and has agreed to serve in that role until a permanent successor can be named.

The NAMI NC Board of Directors has established a search committee to begin a search for an individual to fill this important position. There will also be an affiliate president (to be selected by the newly formed Presidents Council) added to the search committee. Details on the recruitment search will be posted on NAMI NC website. Questions regarding the search may be sent to recruit@naminc.org.

Before his departure, we will have an opportunity to celebrate Jack and his accomplishments while at the helm of NAMI NC. For now, please join me in congratulating and thanking Jack for his service and in wishing him much success as he transitions to his new role.

Sincerely,

Victor R. Armstrong
President, NAMI NC Board of Directors
