Richard Anthony Callahan (Rich), has been serving as Vice President of the Council of Affiliate Presidents since its inception on July 3, 2017. He has also been serving as the President of NAMI Johnston County since 2014. Prior to that, he served as the Affiliate’s Secretary from 2011 to 2014.
Originally from Darby, Pennsylvania, Rich attended the University of Maryland College Park, studying Choral Music Education. At the same time, he began his now 40+-year career as a professional optician. It was also at this time he met Henry Roberts III, the grandson of the man who wrote the book on parliamentary procedure. This would begin his lifelong passion for working on bylaws and corporate charters for non-profit corporations and organizations. He has served as either an officer or member of the board of directors of many of these organizations and corporations in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Florida.
In 2011, Rich moved to North Carolina. His wife, Marilyn, was living in Smithfield at the time, having completed her Master’s Degree in Social Work at UNC and obtaining her LCSW. Four years earlier, on June 10, 2007, Marilyn founded NAMI Johnston County in Clayton.
Rich has numerous family members with various mental illnesses. He is certified in Family Support Group, Family-to-Family, and NAMI SMARTS.
